What happens in a session?
In the session you will be free to talk about your problems and your situation and you will be listened to carefully. I will seek to obtain as deep an understanding of you and what is troubling you as is possible. I will ask questions that are designed to therapeutically enhance your thinking, your emotions, your behaviour and your way of relating to others. Occasionally you might be puzzled by my questioning. In this case, I would invite you to say so, but also to bear with me- there will be a reason I am pursuing a particular line of inquiry which may not always be immediately obvious. Frequently through sessions we will examine what is happening in the 'here and now' of the session- using your reactions and experiences to generate change and insight, and exploring our relationship and finding opportunities for you to find new ways of relating to others and new ways of being.

I may invite you to perform certain therapeutic 'exercises' or experiments which are chosen to match your problem and provide therapeutic movement and change. I may also suggest certain courses of action and may invite you to perform 'homework' tasks in between sessions to increase the effectiveness of your therapy. Generally speaking, therapists do not tell people what to do with their lives- but rather they assist clients to make their own decisions and have the courage and conviction to act upon their decisions.

We will regularly review our work together, assess progress and  look at how we are relating to each other and experiencing our relationship.

A session normally lasts for one hour, although for couples therapy, sessions are an hour and a half long.

How much does it cost?
Individual sessions cost £35. Couples Therapy costs £45 per session

How often do I need to go?
The frequency of sessions is variable. At first it is best to have weekly therapy to make significant changes and to gain a momentum of change. In some circumstances, some people have sessions twice a week, but this is an individual choice and is related to the nature and severity of your problem. Generally, people reduce the frequency of their sessions to fortnightly or perhaps less often when it feels right to do so. We would discuss frequency of sessions in the regular reviews our work.

How long does it take?
The overall length of time you will be in therapy depends upon the nature, severity and extent of your problems and the issues we are addressing, and is also determined by how long you want to take. Some people achieve the results they want in just a few weeks, others may take months or even years. It is important that we go at the pace that suits you. We would discuss the expected length of therapy during the trial period, and we would quickly develop a strong sense as to whether we feel a short term or longer term approach is best.

How do I find out more?
I offer a free half hour mutual assessment session where we can discuss your issues and needs and work out whether therapy would be suitable for you. You will get a sense of how I work during this meeting, and also get a sense of whether I would be the sort of person you would want to work with. You need to feel relatively safe and comfortable, but also suitably challenged. For more information, or to book an appointment call me on 0141 771 9399
